"Why are you doing this?" She asks, fear warring with curiosity.
In his eyes, there's a flicker of regret and for an instant, hope flutters inside her heart, desperate and strong. She reaches out cold fingers to his face.
"Please, don't do this." she begs.
He tugs at the scarf covering his face and she sees his lips, straight and firm. His eyes gaze out at her, cold and dead and she shivers under their attention. That brief hope that she might survive, that she could reach him winks out under that unblinking stare.
"You know how this ends." he says softly.
"You can change your fate Maldrin. I can help you find a way to break free of your contract."
He smiles but it does not reach those cold eyes.
"Many have promised the same and many have failed." he holds up his hands and she can't help but focus on them.
"For what it's worth, I truly am sorry, but I have no choice.".
In the palm of his hand, a bright light flares to life and she finds herself drawn to it. It will be her end. She knows this yet she cannot help herself. The light calls to her and she follows its command.
"In the end, they all die." he whispers to the still body in his arms.
In the distance, he hears the sound of sirens, loud and insistent. He rises and turns his back on her.
When they find her, there is no trace of how she died. She is simply ... gone.
I see you decided to keep him after all. What about your beautiful Mei? When I saw you're selling her, my heart broke. She's one of the few Meis that I really like!
ReplyDeleteAnd of course, love the story. Maldrin seems to be very interesting character.
I am keeping Mei as well, that and she decided to fall and break the prong off her headcap. I have glued it back in place but it was a sign she didn't want to go.
DeleteMaldrin is still largely a work in progress so we'll see what happens to him I guess.
