A Disney Princess

I recently discovered the Classic Disney Princess play line dolls made by Hasbro. From what I've managed to find online, it seemed Mattel and Hasbro were both vying for this line but it was Hasbro who ended up getting it. I don't really know the full story there but the first indication was the lack of greasy hair which was in my opinion a great thing. For those who aren't aware, Mattel seem to have a habit of getting a little too happy with how much glue they stick inside their doll heads. This glue tends to leak out into the hair which makes for very tacky, greasy feeling hair. It's a shame really. There's a temporary fix using talcum powder which I will try on two of my worst affected MH girls.

Whilst browsing for the DC Comic doll Wonder Woman (which they didn't have) at Toys R Us, I came across this play line of dolls and two faces instantly jumped out at me. These were Pocahontas and Mulan.

Let me preface this by saying these dolls have very little in the way of posing. In fact, other than sitting and being able to rotate their heads and look up (not down though), there is not much else they can do. They can't stand on their own either. For the price range of these dolls, I really wasn't expecting much. It's not a total deal breaker for me because I find the faces quite different in a good way.

These dolls seem to be you either like them or you don't from what I've seen. Some people like the faces, some find them a little weird. It all comes down to personal taste.

Although the fabric used for their clothing is not exactly top quality, the designs are interesting and different from what I've seen before. I don't mind the colourful themes they have going on and the glitter does not come off when I run my fingers over them. I was a bit concerned about that.

What I love is the subtle face screening on Pocahontas. I like that she's very toned down. Her hair is wonderfully soft and silky.

Mulan has a slightly different face to Pocahontas. Her features I find are a lot more exaggerated but it's quirky enough that it appeals to me and I can see why it might not appeal to some. Her face is a lot more made up. I really love the colours of her outfit and really find her hair gathered on the side like this looks quite nice. Unlike Pocahontas, the ends of her hair were a bit dry and felt like a bit of product had been used. I've since washed it out and it feels a lot softer now.

One of the things I love about this line is that they have taken into account the height difference which is great and makes for some nice diversity. Mulan really is shorter than Pocahontas. No trick of photography here.

Overall, despite their limits, I find both dolls quite lovely. I don't plan to buy anymore of this line unless they release Esmeralda from 'The Hunchback of Notre Dame' - then I might be tempted to buy her.

*Note: These dolls do not come with stands.

  1. You know how much I love disney movies! These dolls are really nice! too bad they can't pose at all. I think Mulan's face is a little too wide maybe? but the make up is really nice. LOVE the Pocahontas one, the face is very nice!! Colours of the wind is one of my favorite songs ever (though I like it even more in its latinamerican version haha, probably because I grew up with that one).

Out of thse 2 my overall favorite is Pocahontas, her dress is lovely and I really like the boots. Mulan's dress is also very nice, wish they came out with their little pets as well, a tiny mushu would be hilarious!

    1. Out of the two, I do find myself loving Pocahontas more. She has such a lovely face sculpt. I think you might be right about Mulan though. Next to Pocahontas, you can really see the width of her face.

And speaking of Mulan and a pets version ... the Disney Store Version has her with Mushu!

  2. Mulan looks like she's about to say something snarky to me. Maybe it's the eyebrows? I do like Pocahontas' expression though - she definitely looks like her movie self.

I wonder how the skintones compare to Barbies - if they're not too far off, I wonder if it would be possible to put the heads on some of those new articulated Made to Move bodies...

    1. Probably the eyebrows and the press of her lips. She does look kind of annoyed!

Funny you should mention the Made to Move Barbies. I have one and Mulan's skintone at least is very close to the one I have. I was thinking of trying her head on the body although her head is twice the size of Barbie - probably the same in size as MH heads.

  3. Hi Alasse,

The talcum powder does work as a temporary fix though, it does tend to dull the hair a little. I remember seeing this years ago as a temporary cleansing for greasy human hair between shampoos. LOL!

The dolls a quite nice, and I like JS's response regarding changing the heads to the Made to Move Barbie bodies. It could be a great option for you to try.

    Hugs,

    1. I just wish there was an easier way of fixing it other than pulling out the entire hair and glue inside the head and rerooting. I find re-rooting really tedious and don't really enjoy it much.

It is a shame Hasbro did this sort of body for them. Even at least simple articulation like the MH girls have would have been nice. It doesn't really make sense to me given how a lot of dolls these days in the play line series are gearing towards more articulation rather than none! Then again, maybe they are thinking in terms of longevity for rough play ...

  4. Oh gosh, the nostalgia! When I was in elementary school I was mad about the Pocahontas movie, I even had most of the original release Barbies :o
They're both lovely, and I like their alternative outfits and stylized faces!

    1. I do like how colourful their outfits are. I see a lot of complaints that the outfits don't look like the ones that appear in the animated films but personally, I like that it's a different take on it.

I have most of the animated movies here. I like the songs Disney comes up with. They tend to get stuck in your head too!
