Disney Store Pocahontas

Last week, I saw a really good deal on the Disney Store Pocahontas doll on ebay from an Australian seller and decided to grab her. I had been eyeballing this particular one as I really liked her face screening. The doll arrived today (to my surprise as it's a public holiday here).

She has never been removed from her box so was in mint condition.

She is an older release and like most older dolls, they age so naturally there were some very minor flaws (slight discrepancy in the skintone of her body to her face and arms). These are minor issues though and nothing I'm really worried about.

I took some comparison photos with the Hasbro Pocahontas. Sadly, I didn't get many photos as the light was going. I had a few struggles trying to make my pallet furniture which took a lot longer than expected so by the time I got around to taking photos, the sun was already disappearing.

A few obvious differences straight up. Hasbro girl has a more reddish tint to her skin tone whilst Disney girl has a more tan flavour. The face screening is more gentle I find on the Disney girl and closer to the animation version. This is also the same for the outfit. Disney girl also has the little red tattoo on her upper arm same as in the animation. No shoes for the Disney girl.

Hasbro girl has very little articulation to speak of. Disney girl has wrist and elbow articulation. Her legs though are not a hard plastic but more like silicone. Her knees do bend slightly. Her legs remind me a little of the older style Barbie bodies from the 80s/90s. Overall, her plastic feels a lot softer and more bendy/rubbery than Hasbro girl who has a harder plastic feel to her.

I don't really like Disney girl's blue neck piece. It feels very flimsy and cheap but her dress is actually quite nice material and feels pretty solid and well made. Hasbro girl has a softer, silkier feel to her hair but Disney girl has hair that feels very coarse and dry to the touch. It' also incredibly hard to get wet. I ran tap water on it for ages and it did not feel like it was wet at all, slightly, very slightly damp on some bits but not wet. It's a material I've not encountered before on a doll's hair. It's almost like the water just slides off the hair.

Overall, I'm not unhappy about her. I like her face a lot, the dress is really nice but those legs are weird and feel weird to the touch. Can't say I'm a fan of those. I'm glad I didn't pay full price for her though. She didn't come with any accessories or a stand. If I can find a body with a good skin match that is more articulated and better quality, I'll probably upgrade but until then, she can stand on display with the other girl.

  1. Newer barbies don't have the silicone-y legs that bend a little? Wow I live in the past, I thought they still made them that way XD
Your new Pocahontas is really pretty, love her face and skin color more than the Hasbro, hough the Hasrbo one is very pretty as well.

    1. Not that I've seen. There may be some around but the ones I tend to go for don't have those legs as I really do not like them at all. They feel weird and because they are very rubbery, they don't stand well even with aid. The Hasbro girl actually looks pretty neat in normal clothes. I had her wearing something else not that long ago. Her body just drives me insane which is why she is a display doll and not one I really "play around" with.

  2. Hi Alasse,
There are things I like about both these dolls and If I combined them, I might even buy one myself! LOL! All kidding aside they are both pretty in their own way, but I'm just sticking to BJD's, I reckon hubby would throw a whammy if I started collecting anything else. :)
    Hugs,
    X

    1. Yeah I think I've pretty much slowed down / stopped collecting some of the doll lines now like the FR girls, Barbie, the DC girls and I don't plan to get anymore of these Disney dolls either. I've recently picked up a new line (more on that in another post) so I've had to sacrifice purchasing more of some of the other lines but that's okay. I was pretty much done with the other lines as far as the acquiring side of things.

  3. This review/comparison is great! Pocahontas is one of those movies I loved when I was little, I remember having the original Barbie dolls of the movie too, their face sculpts were just a little different from most Barbies which I loved!

    1. Glad the comparison review was helpful! I really love Pocahontas too. I have to admit, I feel the Disney store version is much closer to the anime which is nice. Just wish her body was more articulated.
