I had a tight fitting hat on her that left an unsightly bump and bulge on her hair which is why I was initially trying the boil straighten method. That of course didn't end so well. But it was a good thing to happen as it forced me to change her hair finally.
I used contrasting soft yarn that looks a lot like dreadlocks. I'm not used to how hard FR heads are compared to MH and Barbie so I wasn't expecting to break my needle trying to push it into her scalp. After that little mishap, I ended up having to heat up her head while re-rooting. It was a bit of a pain to do it this way but it did make her head more pliable and I didn't break any more needles.
The results are actually a lot better than I expected. It somehow looks like hair and feels like soft mohair to the touch. It works well on her.
I never really took a photo of Maxine without a hat or scarf on her head previously as her hair didn't really look all that good. The cut was pretty jagged in places and the styling product used on the hair was so thick that the hair itself felt like cardboard, the really hard stuff so I tended to disguise it in photoshoots.
I do prefer her new look a lot better. I just need a more character appropriate clothing to go with the new look.
A little peek at the messy room. The girls are wanting to decorate for Christmas so they've dragged up all the cartons from the dusty store room and have found some tiny little treasures.
Whoa, great job rerooting! It just seems like such a hassle to do those :O but you managed very well!
ReplyDeleteI adore the messy room, it looks very homey in this way!
Thank you! I always seem to like yarn re-roots, they go so much quicker because you can skip a bunch of holes due to the thickness of yarn and it won't look thin at all.
DeleteI've tidied up the messy room since and added a few more things. I think I might make another chair as this one is slightly too big for my Momoko dolls who will be using this particular room and the others I make in this style.
I really need that craft room. I've taken up all the space on our big massive wooden dinning table with my dioramas!
I love the last photo so much, it looks so real! it is a pretty mess!
ReplyDeleteYou did an amazing job rerooting the hair on your FR girl, it looks very nice and I love the purple streaks, it gives it so much style! Didn't think the head would be so hard :O! great idea to heat it up a bit :)
Thanks! I had read the FR heads were hard and re-rooting is a bit more difficult with these dolls but to experience it myself was an eye opener. I can really tell the difference as I'm re-rooting one of the MH girls and the head is so much softer. The needle goes through like knife in butter compared to FR heads!
DeleteI do love that I can add streaks with yarn and it still looks nice.
I'm really enjoying doing these dioramas a lot. It feels good whenever i finish one and step back to take a look. It's like bringing all the Sim interiors I do into a physical form.
Well, haven't we all been there - I messed up one of my MH doll's hair, so I needed to cut it and after a while there was no turning back. :) Reroot!
ReplyDeleteMaxine look lovely, you did a great job rerooting her! And I agree with the others, the room looks just like home - warm and welcoming!
Thank you! Yarn re-roots I find are pretty fun to do. Plus it's very quick as I used the knot method. I should have learned by now not to mess around with hair on older dolls!
DeleteI need to make more dioramas. I like having places the dolls can go to for their photoshoots.
Love that last shot Alasse, looks a bit like my studio right now. Messy but interesting, makes me want to look to see what's inside those boxes. :)
ReplyDeleteHugs,

Lots of magical things inside those boxes! I've been really surprised at how much stuff I've been finding locally that work for doll size, at least the 1/6 scale dolls I collect. It's certainly inspired me to put together this little room box more completely. I now have a few more boxes to make into rooms (thanks to Froggy's tutorials!)
