A little splash of black

I've been wanting to make a diorama from a cereal box like in MyFroggyStuff's tutorials on youtube. I like the idea of recycling things you have on hand.

My enhanced girl, Zoe models a portion of the styled room.

The room itself is made from two cereal boxes, one for the walls and one for the flooring.

Some more dolls decided to model. This size seems to fit a lot of 1/6 scale dolls. I did use a taller cereal box though, one of those extra size ones.

First up is my Momoko 'Mary Poppins' girl, Sophia. I think she fits quite nicely in these surroundings.

Next up is my Banshee girl, Seranna. She actually doesn't look out of place in this set either even if it's a little more upscale than she's used to.

Last but certainly not least is my FR girl, Jordan. These dolls tend to be taller than the rest but she still works fairly well here. She's really hard to photograph for some reason compared to some of my other FR girls.

And to conclude, a work in progress I've been doing on a Elissabat practice head.

I used the application of the sealant, in this case Liquitex Matte Medium, with a make up sponge dabbing lightly on the face making sure to get in all the nooks and crannies. I waited for the layer to dry before applying two more layers in a similar fashion. I found this provided a good amount of tooth. Still not perfect and I still don't feel it gives as much tooth as Vallejo but it worked well enough that most of my watercolour pencils worked. White was a little more difficult to make vibrant. I also added some light scattering of pastel for blush. I will seal this again before building up the vibrancy, maybe with a bit of acrylic.

I'm not really happy with the eyebrows. I went against instinct and tried to follow a tutorial for those which of course never works. I think I will wipe the eyebrows and redo them. I wanted them lower as well however when I was removing her default face, she was stained pretty bad underneath (that whole quality control issue again). This is the first MH doll I have found with this issue. So the eyebrow marks were permanently there. Maybe another go at it will  get most of it off so I can redo the eyebrows the way I normally do them.

I will say that I am much more confident with pencils than a paintbrush so the next step will be a huge learning curve. Slow and steady.

Hope everyone's week is turning out great!

  1. That's quite a retro look you have there with that backdrop Alasse, and all the dolls look comfortable with it. I must do one using the cereal boxes later and if I stuff it up I won't feel so bad about ditching it. :)

The sponge technique for the sealant is one I haven't tried as I still have plenty of MSC on hand. Do you find it gives a smooth finish once you have given the doll a couple of coats?

Looking at the eyebrows, the left one looks better than the right, but they are not too bad considering this is the first time you have used the tutorial and it's not easy getting both to look the same. Still practice makes perfect, I'm sure you will sort it out and have her looking gorgeous in no time. :)

    1. I find the sponge method can give a smooth finish but I find it's a bit uneven, some parts seem to take to pastel and pencils better than other parts and sometimes, it gets really shiny. I don't know why. I think I still prefer the spray method and will continue to use that.

Thanks for the feedback on the eyebrows. I think I will stick to how I normally do them when I sketch portraits.

Would love to see your cereal box dioramas.

    1. Would love to see your results if you are able to make one of those dioramas!

Thank you. I find it so much easier finding props also for the smaller scale dolls.

  3. I love the idea of using cereal boxes, I'll save one ofmthe giant ones here for that purpose now! your tiny faceupping is coming along really nicely, I love the colors on your MH girl! Eye brows are one of my most hated parts about face ups! So hard to get even!

    1. I always wonder how people get those soft feathery looking eyebrows. I've never really been able to make delicate eyebrows at all. I just wish I had more time to devote to face ups but it's been a stressful week and a bit so time has been limited lately.

  4. this diorama is looking great!! Love how "Mary Poppins" seems to fit right in as well as Jordan.
LOVE the wall too and the snowflake shaped wall prop, is it a Christmas ornament? it looks very chic!

    1. Oh yes, good eye! The snowflake shaped wall prop is a Christmas ornament. I'm thinking this diorama may need a small roof section so I can hang the ornament. Right now, it doesn't really sit well against the well.

  5. I often save boxes, of all kinds. You never know when you need one. When the kids were young, they often had projects at school and needed some props. I have even been thinking that one could use a shoe box, for tiny dolls, to create a room or scene.
This diorama looks really great with the colors and props. <3

    1. I think shoe boxes would be great. This is something I want to do myself, create a small "room box" that can display a doll or dolls. It would essentially just be a display piece. I think I would like to do that at some point.
