A Part of Your World

I was finally able to get Little Mermaid Ariel as part of my collection. I've been procrastinating over what version I wanted of her so when I saw the newest Disney Store 2017 Classic Version in the wedding dress from an Australian seller, I snapped her up.

She arrived yesterday and she is gorgeous.

I wanted to show her straight out of the box. I didn't bother with the box itself because it was pretty plain, no frills version as a lot of these classic dolls seem to come in.

Her hair was gelled to cardboard consistency. And as you know, I really hate gelled hair so I knew it would have to be washed out. The Disney body is kind of soft feeling. The arms are articulated at the elbow and wrist. The top part of her does seem to be made of a harder plastic. But then her legs ... why Disney, why? She comes with the bendy legs that feel all wobbly and is very 90s (you know the kind of legs old Barbie dolls used to come with?). Those legs never seem to stand on their own or really bend much. My Pocahontas's original body was the same. Of course, it didn't bother me too much as I got her for her head and outfit. I had plans to re-body her anyway on a Made to Move body.

The veil was attached to her head with tags so seemed like it wasn't designed to be removed. I took it off though and will find a way to sew it onto a headband that can be removed.

Ta- Da! A bit of head surgery later and she is on her new body. She matched up pretty well with MTM Pink Top. Now she can actually sing.

Part of Your World - Little Mermaid

Going casual. She borrowed some of Zoe's clothes which looks great on her in my opinion.

I'm extremely happy with this purchase (although my wallet is starting to complain!) She's a beautiful doll and so photogenic. I love her a lot on the MTM body. (Mattel's best design yet!). I think I will keep her name as Ariel. I love that name.

I actually like both versions of the Little Mermaid for different reasons. The Disney version and the original Japanese animated version that was made in 1975. She was called Marina in that one. The original actually had a bit of a bittersweet ending and was a lot closer to Hans Christian Anderson's original story.

I'll leave you with the theme song from the 1975 version here.

Until next time!

  1. Love her peaches and cream complexion Alasse, she's very pretty indeed. Actually one of the nicest I have seen in this type of doll. Congratulations!

    1. I find sometimes Disney is very hit and miss but this year's Ariel is really stunning.

  2. I love the Little Mermaid! When the movie came out my mom took us to the cinema to watch it. I remember there were journalists outside interviewing kids about the movie but my mom didn't let me go and talk to them, I wonder why.
Then the Barbies were released and I wanted the one in the bride gown so bad! But instead my mom gave me the tropical version and gave the bride version to her boyfriend's daughter, I was so bummed! Still I loved my Ariel :D

Anyways, have you seen the 1968 animation of the tale? It is russian, they used to put it on tv here and it was my favorite version for many many years. The scene were the witch shows Ariel walking in a sphere in the Disney movie is pretty much a copy of a scene from the russian animation. Not that I mind too much at this point, we know Disney reused many of their own animations over and over even. Understandable, since animating is a pain in the ass, have you tried it?? I did in university and it was very hard.
Oh well, LOVE how your Ariel looks in casual wear, hope to see her in more fun outfits.

You can check the russian animation here: https://youtu.be/pCYkE5ouI88
    you have to activate subtitles

Hope you have a great weekend!

    1. Thanks for the link. I've watched a little bit of it. It's pretty good. I always get nostalgic for old movies and animation. They just don't do it like they used to back in the day.

I haven't watched Disney's Little Mermaid in ages so I might have to and check out the scene you're talking about.

I never tried animation although I was interested in it at one point. It does look like a lot of work. I remember watching something about the process though and yeah, twas pretty intense. I am in awe of the people who do it for a living.

Wow, has it been a week since I last checked into the blog? Time flies when things get busy! Hope you are having a great weekend. Wish mine was a lot longer though!

  3. She is so pretty, congrats!
I remember the legs Barbie had in the 80's and the 90's, it was no fun at all. After several years of playing, the legs got sticky. And the-what-ever-they-put-in-her-legs so that they could bend a bit, could later on just pop out. Not fun! Made to Move are so much better.
I really do like her face (so happy) and the red hair (so bright).

    1. I don't know what sort of plastic the legs are made from but I know what you mean. They feel really weird and whenever I come across really old Barbie dolls at the the charity stores here, they have those legs and yes, they do tend to feel so sticky and gross.

Loving Ariel's shade of red too.
