2017: At a glance

Back in December 2016 on the last day of the year, I made some "plans" for 2017. I thought it'd be a good time to see how those panned out.

* More customisation, practice, practice practice

Well, I actually did do some of this, painted a few faces, am experimenting with using airdry clay to sculpt on hair and markings/engravings on MH dolls. I want to make a Dryad. I've wanted one for a while and gave up waiting for one to be released. Although my Dryad isn't your friendly garden variety. I'm planning on something a bit more scary and force of nature-ish. That's the plan anyway. And I'll be trying out some tattoos soon when I do my version of Harley Quinn from Suicide Squad. More on that in a later post.

* Finish Shiva and Lara Croft
I haven't finished either characters (I'm having a hard time finding Lara's guns). I have made Lara's shirt or at least the prototype and have her bag although I just need to repaint it. Shiva I have finally shipped off to my face up artist for the face work. I will need to start on her outfit now while I wait and finish her body tattoos.

* Create more dioramas

Yes. This one I have done. I've made about five dioramas this year, one of which is a work in progress (Ivy's Florist Shop). I plan to make one for my BJDs (hopefully) in 2018 out of plywood.

* Start learning how to sew medieval dresses for the dolls
I've got as far as figuring out how to make the dresses from existing  clothes and using them as a makeshift pattern. I know how the different pieces are constructed. I just have to actually do it. Might start small, Barbie size.

* Try to use acrylic more in my face ups
I have actually started doing this. One of my practice heads is currently sporting a mostly acrylic based face up. Brushwork still needs to be improved though.

* Attempt to paint Barbie faces (Yikes, so small!)

I have definitely done this, both full repaint and partial repaints. They are tiny heads but interestingly enough, they don't freak me out as much as BJD heads!

* Paint the DF practice head I still have blank
No, I never got around to this. I'm still fully intimidated by BJD heads.

* Paint the extra Obitsu head I have
I actually ended up giving this head away. I decided to concentrate on the Barbie/MH faces first before attempting a more anime style.

* Try and upgrade my camera

Done. Hubby bought me a new camera for my birthday earlier this year.

Overall, I think I did pretty well. There were some things left unfinished and some things not attempted. There's always 2018. As someone is fond of saying, "Don't sweat the small stuff."

 How was your year?

  1. Hi Alasse,
Congrats on finishing some, if not all. :) Me ... well no list to worry about this year ... or next year, or the year after. LOL! I'm just a layabout these days, yep footloose and fancy free!
    Big hugs,

    1. Footloose and Fancy Free sounds marvellous! I always say I won't make plans but always end up making them cause it seems like the only way to motivate myself to do something these days!!

  2. I think you did great! :) It is always scary to repaint but as you mention, it is easier with Barbie or MH. Does it not got as planned, it is not such a big deal. But those BJD heads, yikes. I was rather nervous about giving my Narsha Zihu a new face up, so I planned to do it when I was alone, without any disturbance. I'm glad I took that jump.
More sewing and making dioramas sounds just wonderful. I should give those dioramas a try in 2018. I have one box ready to use....

    1. I hope you do end up giving dioramas a go. They are a lot of fun to do especially in the smaller scale. I really like the cute little things you can get in the Barbie size! I just find it a marvel at how small they are!

I plan to attempt some face ups during my break ... hopefully! Fingers crossed!
