The Old Timers

I was browsing some old photos of Impldoll's older sculpts recently and got a bit nostalgic. I am pretty sure these can still be ordered through the company but as a custom order. That's how I got my Christopher who I adore so much. I know a lot of people really like their newer more realistic sculpts and I have to admit, they are really nice sculpts but I have a thing for sculpts that are just a little bit different.  I'm probably one of the few who still enjoy their older sculpts more than their newer.

There was just something uniquely different about them. I guess I am simply cycling back around to my original bjd tastes, the dolls that made me fall in love with the hobby. I like the look of the realistic sculpts but I think and I am sure I have mentioned this before on my blog, my taste tends to a more stylised aesthetic. The older dolls from before the 'realism' movement as I like to call it.

Don't get me wrong, I actually find the realistic dolls breathtaking, I have nothing against them but different strokes for different folks and all that.

These were some of my most sought after wishlist dolls from Impldoll in the early days. In fact, they kind of still are. I've been toying off and on about Iris. I just adore that innocent face of hers. Each of these dolls intrigue me in different ways.

I'm not sure but lately, I yearn for something else, something more in my resin dolls. Something I can't yet form into words but hovers on the tip of my tongue.

A late night musing before bed.

  1. Of course each of us in the hobby has a different taste and that's great because it would be boring if we liked the same things. :) But guess what, Iris drew my attention immediately. I like her eyes and nose. She just could have bigger upper lip or smaller lower but overall she's really cute. It's interesting what features we admire in a particular doll. For instance, I found a perfect body, Dream Valley B4-04, but I don't like the original head. And the problem is there are no other heads I find pretty enough, what's more the neck is only 7 cm so my choice is really limited. ^.^;

    1. Exactly. I love how varied everyone's taste is and I've discovered so many new dolls because of this! Iris does have an interesting face. I think it's those big eyes and downturned lips. Hybriding is something I love and hate. Measurements are so important. I'm finding the same issue with trying to find a body for my Cosmo head. Choices are limited because his head can only really accommodate a smaller neck but his jawline is made for a thicker neck.

      I love the Dream Valley bodies too but like you, I'm not a fan of the heads either and can't really think of any head to put on those bodies. I do get a very Doll Chateau vibe though from them so I am wondering if a sculptor from there broke off and formed his/her own company like what happened with Angel of Dream and Doll Love and Iplehouse and Raccoon Doll.

  2. I've always liked Abagail a lot, and she's not on your photos, but also Erica. I often have been tempted to buy Erica, but somehow I never did. These sculpts all have character, and I like that a lot. It's so surprising that the styles of the old and new Impldolls are so different! I just googled some owner photos of Iris, and she has a very versatile sculpt, she looks so different every time that it seems a different doll each time! I like her with pale face up as well as with a more dramatic darker look. Sleep tight :-)

    1. It's hard to find owner photos of Abagail though. I don't think she was very popular. Ah yes, Erica. I remember her too. She has quite an interesting face. I am thinking maybe Impldoll got a new sculptor, someone more rooted in realism. I did notice that their newer dolls pop up more around social media than they did with their old sculpts. And they got more notice too when they went realistic. It's a shame as you said, their older sculpts had character. And thank you for the word I was looking for! Iris is interesting depending on her face up. She has this wide eyed innocence about her.

  3. I think that's a great thing that we like different dolls. I love watching many of them I don't want to have (thanks Goddness - my wallet coudn't take it!) on other collectors blogs. That's a wonderful experience.

    1. I'm telling you, bjd collecting makes you super broke! I've actually slowed down so much compared to when I first started, thankfully! I also like to read blogs with different dolls even if I never end up collecting that doll line, I like to enjoy them anyway through the blogs and collectors.

  4. You are right, Impledolls sculpts always looked a bit different than the other. As for the bodies, I would like to change the default body of my Tefra (Angell Studio Lucifer). He was my first doll and I bought him on sigle jointed body... which annoys me still. I would also love to get him body a bit taller that default, buuuut... I'm scared of hybridizing ;). Although I think that Dollmoore Model Body would fit him quite good...

    1. I both love and hate having to hybrid dolls. It's great when it works but because we can only go by what we see on the monitor, it can be quite risky. Just do a lot of research beforehand. There is always some sort of information out there. And if it worse comes to worse, you can always try to blush to match. I'm trying to find a body right now for a head and I can only guess on a lot of factors as I can't see the doll in person before buying.

  5. This is the greatest thing with this hobby - there is something for everyone. I often browse on the doll sites and look for new things, but mostly I end up with my favourites. Sometimes I wish that I just could fall for something odd. Well, you never know - crazier things have happened! :D

    1. I like dolls that are a little different, at least these days. My tastes have changed a lot since I started the hobby. That's always inevitable I think in a hobby where there are always changes happening.
