Sewing Adventures Ahoy

Today's Playlist:  Something Just Like This ~ The Chainsmokers & Coldplay

Another day, another sewing adventure. Over the past two days I have been working on Rune's outfit. I found this neat little outfit pattern and tutorial by Lomi's Playground.

Overdress | Pirate Wench Outfit

I learned how to do lining for an outfit for the first time. That was fun. And this is also the first time I've installed eyelets which was ... interesting. Of course I learned a lot again with this one and I had to adjust the dress a lot because apparently a Littlefee which the dress was designed for is much chunkier than my Bimong girl. I will make this outfit a few more times until I can perfect it. My first attempt took an entire day. Hopefully now I've wrapped my head around how to do it, it might go faster. I want to do a green overdress for her and a lilac overdress for her with different colour combinations for the pirate wench dress.

It's not a perfect dress and there are glaring errors but for my first attempt, I'm quite happy with the overall result. Making this two more times might improve my finished quality, maybe? I plan to make her boots out of felt and leather. I found my stash of leather scraps today.

You'll notice also that I changed out her wig. This one goes great with the dress but also with her green eyes. Plus, she now looks more like the feisty Rune that I have in my head. In my changed character makeover of her, she is now the daughter of a candle maker who will be the eventual friend of Yaalana - the young girl who gets sucked into the world of a magical book where Rune is one of many characters.

On to Inara. I have now moved her to my fantasy story, Daughter of Fate. She is a member of the Tallanon (Southern Kingdom). She takes on the character known as The Bandorai, a female druid/shaman class type character. She is the sometimes Avatar of the Great Goddess.

I am designing her outfits currently. These aren't complete outfits. They are just bits of material and trims etc pinned together to create a look. I find I need to see my designs visually rather than illustrating them (which I do as well). In this first set I call simply, "White", she is presenting the everyday aspect of the Goddess she worships, the benevolence, the gentle nature and wisdom.

In the next set I call 'Black', her outfit is designed to represent the darker side of the Goddess, the side that deals with death and vengeance and war. This side of the Goddess is more unforgiving and harsher. The Bandorai worship both aspects of the Goddess but there are sects that only worship one or the other. It depends on the person.

This outfit would be something Inara wears when presiding over funerals mostly or for celebrating festivals that happen specifically at night, as night is the dominion of the black aspect whereas day is the dominion of the white aspect.

I am debating a possible third aspect but I need to think more about whether it's needed or not. If I decide there will be one, again that aspect will have its own outfit and colour scheme to represent it.

Last but in no way least is my tiny little girl, Caeda. This poor girl has been moved around so many times this week as I wasn't sure where she fitted in. At the end of the day, I decided to just make her a cute character that interacts with my two 16cm dolls.

She's a rabbit. Yep, those white fluffy rabbits. At least she was before Kestrel decided to try an experimental spell on an innocent rabbit and turned her into a human girl. Unfortunately, Kestrel has no idea how to reverse the spell. Kestrel is notorious for having spells backfire or go wrong when she casts them. She's terrible at spells. Not that she would admit to that.

So poor Caeda is spending her days as a human girl while waiting for Kestrel to figure out how to reverse the spell. I do have a rabbit head band. I just forgot to put it on her! Oh well.

And that's all for this week in sewing. Hopefully I can have something more to show next week.

Have a good weekend everyone!

  1. I really like all the outfits, even if some are not finished yet, especially "White". Crystal pendant looks lovely too!
When you mentioned the third aspect of the Goddess, I though about Celtic three aspect goddesses - the Maiden, the Mother, the Crone. Or Greek Moirai...
Poor rabbit! I hope the spell will be reversed, although Caeda is such a cute girl :)

    1. The crystal pendant was made for me by a friend. It's gorgeous isn't it and works so perfectly for this character. Ah I like that we have the same thoughts on fantasy. That's exactly where I was going with the Great Goddess - she has the three sides of birth, life and death.

I should find a nice rabbit for her to be friends with.

  2. I'm really enjoying seeing you sewing Alasse, and the fact you are not letting it beat you. You have so many lovely design ideas for your dolls to wear in our stories, it's great to see them come to fruition.
Poor bunny, I hope she can return back to her original form one day.
    Big hugs,

    1. It's nice to see visual ideas but the final piece will no doubt differ quite drastically as I tend to change things once I see them come together. Eyelets almost beat me last night. I was so frustrated with them. I need to check if what I'm using is the right size though.

Me too but with Kestrel at the helm, she might just as likely end up as a frog or something else entirely!

  3. Salute you have made beautiful dresses for your doll. Their character is strong with the clothes they wear.

    Greetings from Indonesia.

    1. Thank you for the kind words. Sewing is something I've recently started to enjoy so my characters are a good motivator.

    1. I still really like the 'White' outfit so I may still make that one but for Amaryll as her travel outfit. I want to add a cape using those feathers. I'm excited to make more of those YOSD outfits. I found a pattern over at Antique Lilac for SD but I am going to see if I can downsize to YOSD to see how it goes.

  5. Agree with Kamelia, you are on fire! And eyelets - can imagine that those were interesting! Great outfits!

    1. Eyelets can be a pain. I have the right tools for it but I don't know what was going on. It worked pretty smooth for this outfit but for my SD I had one eyelet that just didn't want to attach. Frustrating!

  6. Those are really nice outfit projects. I like the black gown the most. Perhaps you can adorn it with black beads, sequins or feathers. Poor rabbit, but on the other hand, as a girl she looks so cute. :)

    1. I originally got that black fabric to make my version of Edea from Final Fantasy VIII. I still might do that. It depends. See I'm the opposite to you. I seem more drawn to the white gown more, maybe because it has more of a Goddess feel. But I would like to create both although I think if I did the black, Mahalia would wear it as her second gown. I don't see black as Inara's colours now. But good idea with the black beads, I actually have some of those. I think black feathers would look awesome with that design. I will have to look for some.

I know she is so squishy cute as a girl but I hope to find a rabbit one day to represent her "soul".

  7. The overdress with the eyelets is really great, you did well getting those eyelets so nice and straight as I know what a nightmare they can be to put into the fabric. She is really pretty and I like her story. The other black and white outfits are very good too, again your stories amaze me, you have such an imagination!

    1. I actually bought those eyelet kits with those tools you have to use a hammer with except the one that "cut holes" didn't work so I ended up using one of those needle thingys (can't remember the official name) to poke a hole through and luckily, I bought an eyelet plier years ago for some reason and used that to install the eyelets. It makes it easier. Except when it decides not to randomly work. I heard there is a hole puncher tool you can get for fabric so I'm looking into that.

I mostly did the story because I want to make more of those outfits! I have three lined up waiting to be sewn together, all with different colours for the overdress.

I think I will most likely try a version of the white outfit for Amaryll instead as I think it is more her style. I have so many sewing projects lined up right now. And because I'm only a beginner, they are taking me a whole day to do each outfit. (I make mistakes a lot and have to unpick!)
