Shardo of the Denry'ii

Character Playlist Inspiration: The Riverlands ~ BrunuhVille

Today's focus is on Shardo, my Denry'ii warrior in training. He ended up bald because I just couldn't find a wig I liked on him and then after some debate, I opted to just not have him wear a wig as I wanted him to have a monk-llike vibe.

He originally had two dark eyes but I decided to change it up a bit today to see how he would look with two different types of eyes. Then I just kind of wrote that into his character background as the Denry'ii are known for the fact they are born with different coloured eyes. This is what makes people afraid of them - those born with different coloured eyes are said to not be fully human and have been possessed by a dead spirit. It's a superstition among the general public - whether it's actually true or not ... well, that remains to be seen.

The Denry'ii are nomadic clans that live on the plains of Caizar. They don't get involved with the Empire if they can help it. They are a race of warrior mystics who are believed to not have originally hailed from Caizar but from a land far beyond the South Sea in the unknown regions.

Shardo is a young man nearing the end of his training. He is about to embark on a quest to earn his warrior's sash. He has lived with his master since he was five seasons, training to become a warrior to protect the Denry'ii from its enemies. It's said that in times past, they were the protectors of the Seers of Arendel before the Order fell at the hands of the Prince of Shadow's servants, the Elyder Wytches.

They fight using their 'Ki' - life energy, channeling it into their moves and using the force of their Ki to overpower their enemies. This form of fighting is unusual in the world and it is one of the main reasons the rumours of being possessed by dead spirits possibly originated. They recoup their energy through deep meditation. The Denry'ii believe that at the end of one's life, their Ki will rejoin the Great Wheel and evolve one day to be reincarnated. They also have the uncanny ability to predict their enemy fighter's moves before they perform it which makes beating a Denry'ii warrior difficult unless moves are not planned in advance.

Shardo with a wig. Maybe I'm used to him without a wig but this looks weird to me plus you can't fully get the impact of his eyes and the cracks that extend from his dark eyes above and below. I definitely prefer him without a wig. I do have an idea of a staff that he carries around - he can use it in fights as well although it doesn't look at all like a weapon.

He will either join up with Jamal and Ydros or team Ailsa, Arianna and Mareth. Hmm, I just realised I split the two groups into team girls and team boys. That was not intentional.

I do plan on getting another MSD girl sculpt but I've not yet decided if she will be a part of this story or not. Although I do have ideas for a ranger type character - a freelancer with a fiery attitude who will join Jamal and Ydros on their journey if Shardo ends up on the girls team. The character could easily be a boy sculpt too so ... who knows. While I procrastinate, I'll just continue to add to my doll fund nest egg until I'm ready to order.

Hope everyone has a good week ahead.Tomorrow marks the first day of June. That's half a year gone!

  1. Yes, he does have a monk vibe. And he makes me think of CLAMP mangas. Somehow he resembles Ryu-oh from RG Veda or Clef from Magic Knight Rayearth. Only bold. :) His monk outfit is great, especially that red embroidery. He looks OK with a wig but I think he should have something without bangs or shaved hair on one side of his head.

    1. I haven't read either of those two CLAMP titles in a while. RG Veda was my first manga ever and that story was what got me into them. I love CLAMP's art style. The outfit was one I got from Dollmore. It was such a neat little buy. It didn't fit the Minifee boy I got it for initially but fits my Luts boy perfectly. The main thing is not to cover up that really lovely face up work on one side of his face. It looks like spidery web lines coming from his eyes. I love it.

  2. Hi Chari,
I like the wig on him, but you're right it does defeat the purpose. I just had a thought, maybe you could make him a scull cap, then when you look at him you will see his incredible eyes, but not the join in his head. :)
    Big hugs,

    1. Yeah it hides all that detail in the face up which I love and one of the reasons I ended up getting this version of Maska. Scull cap? I'd love to hear more. You mean like a wig cap but the colour of his head? Yeah that is the only thing that ruins the look - that join in his head really does pop out at me. I guess I could also do a wig with really close cropped hair but I really don't know.

  3. He looks really intriguing with different coloured eyes, but I must confess, that I prefere him with a wig. But then again, in the wig he looks mostly cute, less monk-ish, definitely. And his robes are fantastic!

    1. I wasn't really sure how the different coloured eyes would go but I don't mind them on him which is good. I really need to figure out the hair situation. But that can be a problem for another day!

  4. I like the wig on him but think he looks equally good without. And if it's a monk like appearance you're after then without is certainly the way to go. The outfits is really good too, love that embroidery.

    1. Dollmore does some nice clothing I have to admit. This was a great find and I like that it suits him so well. Honestly I don't think no other doll has worn this outfit since I got it. I might have tried it on Ydros at some point but didn't like it on him.

  5. I feel it's a bit hard to make characters with 2 different eye colors right, because sometimes people tend to use 2 different sizes or styles of eyes and it looks very unnatural to me. I realize having 2 totally different eye colors is already pretty odd, but I like how natural your character looks in it, I think you made a geeat choice there.
I like him both with and without wig, I don't thin khe looks weird at all in any way.
How are things going? Hope everything is good and well.

    1. The two different eyes - I've always been curious about this and none of my dolls have this feature until now. I decided to write it into the background of his race and make it something a bit more normal in the fantasy world - in its own way. I'm just glad it didn't look too contrasty.

Battling a bad cold at the moment so been under the weather since last weekend.

  6. I agree he looks very good without his wig - it better suits his role.
And I love the idea with different eyes colour.

    1. I will most likely leave him without a wig unless I find something suitable at some point in time but as I'm not ordering anything from overseas right now, I'm just waiting. I really wanted to give the different eye colours a background story too.

  7. Time flies fast and July is already here! Hope that all is fine!
He looks great without the wig and his details are shown much better then. I like the monk vibe. Sometimes I let Zipporah go without a wig for some of the photoshoots I have.
    His outfit is amazing!

    1. The monk vibe is indeed what I was going for so that's great to hear! It also means one less expense if they don't need wigs right?
