Hubby had to make an emergency run to the shops last night so I went with him (apparently working from home means he is running out of clothes to wear) and whilst there, I managed to find the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 Barbie series. I wasn't planning on picking up any dolls to be honest as I recently made a big purchase earlier that morning (more on that in a separate post when the doll arrives!). But this particular girl and her big cheery smile just made me feel happy plus I really like her shirt.
Yes, she stands quite well on the skateboard with no support. She did eventually fall backwards when a gust of wind came through but if not for that, she would have maintained this pose for quite a while. One thing I didn't really understand with Mattel's choice was not giving this girl a MTM elbow. Despite this, she can still touch her face so it's all good. Her knees also do not have the MTM knees. For the price point ($29 AUD), I would have expected at least MTM joints. Oh well, lucky she is so cute that she makes up for the lack of them. Overall I do love this girl and the accessories she came with. She also came with an additional long sleeve Tokyo 2020 shirt and a gold medal.
My Star Wars dolls rarely get a look in so I thought whilst I had my camera out and the sun was shining, I'd take a photo of Qui-Gon Jinn doll. Hubby actually ended up with two of these (presents from family) so he kept one in the box for his Star Wars display room (yes he has a whole room dedicated to his Star Wars collection) and gave the double up to me. Of course, I took him out of the box straight away because that's how I roll. The clothing is so well made. Not a lot of posing ability on him though but he looks neat.
Back when the Star Wars Prequel films came out, Hasbro released dolls of Amidala/ Padme in the various costumes seen in the Prequels. Needless to say, I bought most of them. I adore the costuming in those films. Not so much the story but at least the costume eye candy made it worth it. This is one of the Amidala dolls. The clothing is okay, not as good of a quality as Qui-Gon but also not bad.
Hasbro also released three special Portrait Edition dolls which are insanely hard to find. Hubby bought one of those for me back when they were released and I managed to find another one last night for a steal and never removed from the box so naturally, I bought it. I will do a post on that one when she arrives.
Tonner also released a whole bunch of dolls but of course, those are a lot more expensive and even harder to find and second-hand prices for those are through the roof.

Cue Music: Qui-Gon's Noble End ~ John William
Scene opens on a busy market in Naboo. The sound of stormtroopers weaving through the crowd can be heard. There are cries of protests as bystanders are pushed to the side in their haste.
"Make way. Make way." a deep mechanical voice sounds.
The flicker of a red cape passes in a blur disappearing into a nearby alleyway.
Amidala: Do you think we lost them?
Qui-Gon: The man leading them is dangerous. We cannot easily evade him.
The stormtroopers are closing in along with their battle droids. Qui-Gon glances at the Queen. Their mission is too important. Whatever else happens, she must make it to the palace.
Qui-Gon Jinn: You must trust me Your Majesty and do what I say.
Amidala: If you're about to say what I think you are ...
Qui-Gon Jinn: We cannot risk the file falling into Imperial hands. You must continue on without me. Find Obi-wan and he will get you into the palace. Go. I will cover you.
Amidala opens her mouth to protest but time is running out and her people are in far greater danger.
Amidala: Your sacrifice will not be forgotten.
Qui-Gon Jinn: Go now. May the force be with you.
And so our hero enters his final battle...
Just a quick short I had in my head when I was taking photos of this. I was really surprised to find his head has such a great range of mobility. That's it for today.
Happy weekend!
Congrats on your new arrival Alasse. It's cool she can ride the skateboard unaided, she must have great balancing skills. :) I like the accessories she came with too.
ReplyDeleteGlad you have some sun it's been raining all day here.
Hugs,
X
I have to be careful when balancing her though as a little too much to the left or right and it doesn't work. I was so stoked when I realised she could stand unaided on the skateboard. She does have feet grippers on the skateboard itself but you still need to balance her just right to get her like this.
DeleteThe weather has just turned cold again here which is typical seeing as I have to go into the office more often now. Murphy's Law!
Congratulations on your new doll, her smile is really bright, and her balance - extraordinary! Yesterday I saw in one of the shops Olympic Karate and Softball Barbies, but not this one.
ReplyDeleteAnd I loved your Star Wars story! I always felt that Qui-Gon Jinn died too soon...
Her cheery smile is what drew me to her. I didn't realise how much I missed having a smiley doll. And it's such a big wide smile too. Not those petite polite ones that often come with Barbie. I didn't see the other Olympic ones. It seems like she was the only one they were selling in the store. There were 3 of her so at least I got to look carefully to see which one had the best face.
DeleteMe too. Poor Qui-Gon. It was nice to take photos of my Star Wars dolls. They rarely get a look in.
It seems the skateboarder has the body similar to S.I.S. Barbies. Yeah, pity Mattel didn't give her MtM body. But she looks nice. The Star Wars dolls have nice hair. Amidala's costume could be more detailed but there's always an opportunity for you to revamp it. :)
ReplyDeleteWhat are the S.I.S Barbies? Her posing isn't horrible despite not having the MTM body so that's good at least. And she's definitely got more muscle than the typical Barbie body.
DeleteYeah I was really surprised at how nice the hair was. Amidala's costume pretty much looks like that too in the movie. I could revamp her costume but ... to be honest, my Star Wars are pure collectible dolls so I don't make any changes to them at all. Some of the other dolls have weird feeling hair (from styling products I assume) but I keep them like that. They're a different breed of dolls to me than my other dolls. They fall into the "Display, Photography but no amendments" category.
Congrats on your new doll, she is cute with her smile. Mattel could have given her a Made to Move body. The accessories are great and the shirt is adorable!
ReplyDeleteWonderful Star Wars story!
Enjoy the new week!
Or at least MTM elbows or legs if they didn't want to do both but at least she's not too bad at posing and she works great on the skateboard so I can't complain too much. Just a little.
DeleteI don't often write "fan fiction" to be honest. I always feel weird writing stories in worlds created by other people's blood sweat and tears. Almost like I'm intruding on someone's private thoughts. Strange I know.
Enjoy the week ahead!
New lady is really cute - I like her smile too. No wonder you couldn't resist. ;) And yes, I don't understand either why on Earth Mattel didn't give them mtm body. They are athletes!
ReplyDeleteQui-Gon Jinn looks amazing! And I love all the photos.
She has the best smile and it just looks like one of those joyful smiles too which I love. I also love that she isn't slender like the typical Barbie. I really do love that Barbie are doing more body shapes these days. Qui-Gon Jinn's hair is really soft. I was quite shocked to discover that as I honestly wasn't expecting much at all!
DeleteMe too! I really like all the shapes and faces. If they only take more care about the quality...
DeleteWhat a cute Barbie, I like the shirt too.
ReplyDeleteYour Star Wars dolls are great too!

I love her big smile. That's what did it for me!
