If you've been in the hobby since the early 2000s, you'll remember a company called Dream of Doll. They were among one of the first doll companies I came across back in 2004. I stumbled onto them by chance when I was heavily into The Sims 2 game. A custom content creator had made a "BJD Skintone" for the sims and credited the reference to "Dream of Doll". Naturally curious, I followed the link and found a website devoted to BJDs. Thus began my love affair with these dolls. (Angel of Dream, Dollzone and Luts were the next companies I discovered.)
On a side note, I actually created a Sim later that was inspired by one of the Dream of Doll sculpts.
Back in those days, I didn't earn enough on a waitress wage to even consider owning one of these dolls but they were always there in the back of my mind... "One day, I would buy one." I thought to myself. It took until 2009 before that dream became a reality (however my first doll ended up being from none of the companies I first discovered - it was a Doll Family Lyre. He was all I could afford at the time and he was on sale.) Ah but I do still remember the feeling of pressing the "Buy" button on my first. You always remember your first even if they have moved on.
Dream of Doll have that old school aesthetics that I fell in love with and still prefer to this day. Don't get me wrong, I love all my dolls but the old school aesthetics has a particularly special place in my heart.
Now that we have that super long nostalgic trip out of the way, let's move on to the subject of this post. The New Doll. It is Dream of Doll Yu. Back when I first found their website, there were many sculpts that I wanted but realistically could not afford. However, I started to save and Yu was one of the sculpts I had been saving for when Dream of Doll closed its doors. It came out of the blue and frankly I had to give up on ever acquiring this sculpt. Yu became yet another sculpt in a list of "Never to achieve grail dolls." Until now...
As luck would have it, a wonderful person in my country decided she would let her Dream of Doll Yu go. He had stains on him (which I fixed in less than 5 minutes) and he was very loosely strung (by this I mean he was like a rag doll!) Easily fixed with a restring using new elastic and he was yellowed (not unusual for an older doll). He had the ORIGINAL Dream of Doll face up. Of course, I decided to buy him right then and there. This was Yu with his original face up. Enough said.
So here he is in his new home. Dressed and ready to meet the other members of the Wayward Inn. This was when I tried green coloured eyes on him. I like the eyes but they were so big that it was all pupil and very little whites.
You can see more clearly here the green eyes were huge and they were only 14mm.
From the photo below, I changed eyes, I believe they are 14mm as well however the pupil appears a bit smaller. These are life-like eyes. I believe acrylic.
His wig is a bit tricky to style to look right but I like the colour and style on him. Glad I had so many spare wigs lying around! He is a lot chunkier than my other MSDs so he is another unusual size doll. None of the clothing I have fit him so it was lucky his previous owner sent him with some clothing. Looks like I will have to either order or make him some clothes.
I have named him Khai, a quiet boy who keeps to himself except when he sees someone being bullied, then he steps in. He doesn't like bullies. Lucky he is stronger than most people. Not that he likes to advertise that. This character is a part of the Urban Fantasy story, 'The Red String'.
That's all for this post. Phew, it was a long wordy one I know. Thank you for staying with me until the end! I'm off to do more makeovers.
Khai seems to be a very nice person. This is somehow so nostalgic, those were the days of 18mm eyes... Congrats on finding him!
ReplyDeleteHe is a kind hearted boy even if he likes to keep to himself. DOD recommended 16mm in him. Wow! But yes, I remember those 18mm days too. I'm finding that I am getting nostalgic a lot as I get older. And thank you. I prefer to buy within my country (safer shipping) so it was lucky that someone was letting him go so he arrived pretty fast.
DeleteIt's such a great feeling when a dream comes true. :) Your boy is so sweet! You're right, those old-fashioned dolls have some kind of charm. My Akira is a bit old-fashioned, he came with 18 mm eyes while the right size for him is 14 mm.
ReplyDeleteIt's so interesting that the companies seem to go bigger with the eye recommendations for their dolls. Maybe it's to get that big innocent eyes anime style? It is nice to get him home. I still can't get over how solid he feels in my hands.
DeleteLovely photoshoot of Khai. Isn't a wonderful feeling to finally bring home a grail doll, especially when you've waited so long? Obviously he was meant to be yours.
ReplyDeleteBig hugs,
X
It seems to happen that way for me, once I give up, they seem to show up randomly after I've no longer thought about them. Sometimes at the wrong times though. There have been some sought after dolls I've wanted but had to pass up because the budget wasn't doing so great at that point in time and I couldn't really get any dolls.
DeleteCongratulations on getting your Grail!! He really is lovely and it's such a lucky event, that you could get him, even when company no longer exist... I remeber browsing their site, not only for the dolls, but fantastic clothes too. I wanted Ducan for quite a time ;)
ReplyDeleteI'm sure Khai will be happy in your house!
Oh yes, Duncan is so lovely. I have seen him come up second hand not that long ago. I can't remember where, maybe DOA... He was beyond my budget so I didn't really pay too close attention. I am looking forward to sewing for him eventually.
DeleteThe doll was very well looked after, I am super impressed. He has yellowed though and it doesn't really show up in my photos because of the lighting but in person, it is noticeable, but doesn't bother me. My CP Chiwoo head is from 2006 and it is quite a butter yellow but with the right lighting, you can't really tell. I feel like yellowing adds character to the dolls and is a testament to their age.
ReplyDeleteI agree, yellowing doesn't bother me either, I even like the buttery yellow, it suits the dolls. I've read the three parts of your story by the way, it's great! I look forward to reading what happens next. :)
ReplyDeleteThank you for reading the story! It takes a while to release. I don't have much in the way of props for the BJD scale. I have heaps for my Barbie size dolls though. It's more the issue of space.
ReplyDeleteKhai looks cute and adorable. Congrats on finding him!
ReplyDeleteThank you. He is such a lovely doll.
