[Story] A Warning in the Skies

Author Notes: Part 04 of the story {The Shadow of the Dark} is finally here. This part of the story introduces the next companion who will meet up with Mareth, Jamal and Ydros.

I have also updated The Stories page to keep track of what is coming and what is still a work in progress. The photos are the hardest things to convey. The story I already know but matching the photos to them can be tough. Especially when you are working with limited props on hand.

The Wild Woods - half a day's travel from Farnworth

"A storm's coming." Arianna gazed up at the clear sky from where she crouched, gathering herbs for the night's meal. She studied the shapes of the clouds drifting by and listened intently to the whispering of the wind.

"From the East." she frowned. That way lay the Kingdom of Caizar. She had heard of the rumours that swirled like striking snakes around the new Empress. Blood magic, they said. Unexplained deaths of slaves, drained of their blood. Soldiers raised up, serving only the word of the Empress, needing no rest or food. Unholy, dark forbidden arts. The words spread like the plague across the land, an impending wave of dread and fear. Even here, in the lonely woods, far from civilisation, she had heard their whispers.

"Did you feel it too?" A brown speckled bird landed on a nearby branch. It shook its body and began to change.

In its place, a creature, human-like in appearance save for the pointed ears and smaller size. She, for it took on the shape of a female, tilted her head slightly and gazed unblinking at Arianna.

"Something is stirring." Arianna rose and picked up her basket of herbs. The creature, Kestrel was her name floated along beside her as if riding the wind.

"It troubles me." she continued thoughtfully. "For many moons now, I have felt something shift in the air, a change, small but present."

Kestrel floated backwards, her eyes never leaving Arianna. "The trees speak of dark things, the ground shakes with fear of it, the water sheds tears of remembrance and the air shrieks in warning."

They arrived at a resting place, hidden by thick twining branches. Here, Arianna found the mushrooms she had been searching for. Thick succulent bulbs, perfect for cooking.

"There'll be visitors tonight." she said warily resting on a tree trunk.

"Three of them. They bring trouble." Kestrel sounded worried. She plucked something out of the air and shoved it into her mouth.

"We both knew this day would come. We will have to leave the woods." Arianna gazed into the distance. She prayed they would return one day but the wind remained silent.

  1. I had to go back and read through the other parts, slowly and across days, but this one is looking good! Can't wait for the next part!

    1. Thank you for reading my story. It is slow going. I wish I had more props for this size but sadly I don't so have to get a bit creative with how I try to portray the story. I'm not looking forward to doing the SD ones as I'm not sure how to stage some of the scenes. This is why it takes me so long between parts.

  2. You can really feel the tension, both in text and in the photos. I love Arianna's clothes, such a wonderful colour! Look great with her hair.

    1. Thank you for reading. I'm glad the tension came through. I find the photos really hard sometimes to do for the stories. Just lack of props really is where the frustration comes from a lot of the times.

Arianna's clothes were made by Kamilla Dolls: http://kameliadolls.blogspot.com/

They are a beautiful colour aren't they. I hadn't planned on her being a redhead but when I put that wig on her ages ago, I really liked it - the colour was so vibrant and the dress just pars well with it.

  3. That's a wonderful story! Even without photos I can easily imagine the scene. I like your writing style, it reminds me of Andre Norton and Robert Jordan.

    1. Thank you so much for the kind words. I have read Robert Jordan and have heard of Andre Norton but haven't read any books by the author yet. So I will have to have a look. I'm in need of new reading books too as I just finished the one I've been reading for the past few months.

  4. I love where this is heading Alasse. It was clever using the Kestrel photo to help portray the scene. :)

    1. Thanks for reading! I wanted to visualise the bird that Kestrel turns into. I wasn't sure about anything except it was brown and then I thought, hey her name is Kestrel so why not see what those birds look like and I really liked how they looked. It fitted perfectly to how I imagined Kestrel's bird form to look like.

    1. Thank you! I enjoyed this one. Taking photos outside is always fun as no need for props, at least not much anyway! And the dress you made for her really photographs so well. Such a lovely emerald colour. She hasn't worn anything else since I got the dress. It just looks too nice on her to change her out of it and into anything else!

  6. Thank you for reading, the photos are always difficult. I try to keep it simple but still convey what I want.
