The Inspiration Behind Deirdre Quinn

Today, I want to talk a little about my longest running character and her doll form. In a previous post (which I can't find because I probably filed it under something totally random), I talked about the fact that Deirdre has gone through three sculpt changes over the years. And her original name was Maeryn Grey.

The character of Maeryn Grey was firmly set in the medieval era. Originally, she had dark hair and piercing dark eyes. She was the only daughter of a Warrior Queen (Najara) and King Ronan of the Western Kingdoms. She became Queen at the age of fifteen after the death of her mother at the hands of their Xaren enemies on the battle field that would later become known as The Bleeding Plains. Forsaking tradition, she married her Head of Intelligence, Matthias and bore three children, all girls. She was also known to be a practicing Priestess of the Veiled Goddess.

The original Maeryn Gray. She had a somewhat dark beauty about her and an air of danger. (Doll Love Brian with face up by Hydra Kitten on AOD body).

This was the second version of her although clearly, here, she is slowly becoming Deirdre Quinn with the green eyes and red hair. Already, her face has become softer, more gentle. (DK Shuin Qing on AOD body, default face up).

Finally, she fully embraces Deirdre with the original green eyes (later changed to blue). (AOD Qian with face up by Xhanthi).

Essentially, it's at this point that I believe she has changed from the character of Maeryn Grey to Deirdre Quinn.

At one point, I did have a RS Chun with a custom face up (I don't recall the face up artist sadly as I had purchased her second - hand with the face already). Deirdre essentially became and was largely inspired by both Maeryn Grey and the RS Chun doll. She is still a lady of noble blood but with a far more gentle disposition and features than the original Maeryn Grey who inspired her character.

Having said that, I do miss Maeryn. I miss her dark beauty. I miss her air of danger. I miss that you really never know which side of the line Maeryn fell on, good, or evil or did she walk the delicate balance between both?

I would love to re-shell Maeryn again as a separate character from Deirdre. I would love if they were rivals, maybe even immortals who have lived through the centuries. Two faces of the same coin or something like that, after all, they are both priestesses of the Veiled Goddess who herself has two faces, one shown in the light and the other hidden by the shadows.

Something to procrastinate on ...

Do you ever have characters that have evolved over the years? Whether that be their personality, background or the actual sculpt itself? Are these characters still with you or have you put them to rest?

  1. I think that dolls go through a change, as we people do. If I compare myself with different stages in life, I have been rather different. In young age it was blond hair, no make up. As a rebelling teenager it was make up and red hair. As an adult it was more shorter hair…and so on.

A change can be something good, too. Even if it does not feel like it and you may miss the other personality. A good is to keep them both, as a special character, when she is in public and when she is behind closed doors, as you wrote in the light and in the shadows.

My dolls have the same character, so far, and I have not changed a bit. Just Esther’s face up. I would love to do something more, because I feel that something is missing. Need to figure that out. I mostly wonder and wait if something will come up…

Hope that you can find a way for her to go, balanced, evil or good! She is a beauty.

    1. I really like how she's evolved. Right down to her complete change in appearance. I think the physical changes were really inspired by the legend of Deirdre of the Sorrows. Plus red hair is one of my favourite colours.

When the time comes, I am sure Esther's missing piece will fall right into place. Sometimes it takes a while for any changes to show themselves.

I do like her modern persona a lot. I just need to find personality appropriate clothing. She's definitely more of a bohemian fashion girl.

  2. It's interesting to read how your character evolved and finally became completely separate/transformed!
I also think the darker and mysterious character is interesting to explore!

Be careful with those plans though, you'll end up with a wishlist again! x3

    1. No wishlists. When anything gets added to my procrastination circle, it tends to stay there! It's an idea I have and think it'd be great to do for all of 30 seconds before the reasons why I shouldn't start to edge the idea out.

I think I will explore the darker character though in the written form.

  3. I love her evolution a lot but I understand you wanting to bring her other side, as is so much different from her actul self, though it's still her. I know you don't want more BJDs so this won't happen (anytime soon anyways) so I hope we get to at least read about it.

Lucas has gone through some changes since I first created the character, but nothing too major I think. He was 2 characters at one point but I discarded the second and took what I liked about him and put it on Lucas.

I've "killed" characters when i got rid of the big dolls that represented them. As for Lucas, not sure if I get him in MSD, but I'd love to have a child version of him (YoSD) at some point in the far future.

    1. Ooooh a child version of Lucas! That is intriguing. I'm super curious what sculpt you would pick for that. I'm sure whatever you pick, he will be fantastic.

Never say never. I may still get a Peakswood YoSD at some point. I keep looking at their dolls and you know, someone always takes stunning photos of their Peakswood dolls which keep tempting me...

I'm thinking of incorporating a bit of that darkness in Deirdre. I mean, she did have a past life as Maeryn Gray so a little bit of that would have somehow seeped into her blood. And then of course, the former self known as Maeryn Gray may very well want to emerge at some point to deal with unfinished business ... something to mull over.
