Transmutation

Ever had one of those sculpts, you know the kind, the ones where it's impossible to find the right look, the right wig, the right eyes, the right body for? You've dwindled the slush fund buying wigs/clothes/eyes that just never work and you're left with a pile of stuff that makes you grimace.  I have not only one, not even two but three of those sculpts. They are Popodoll Bomu, Dollzone Cosmo and Dollzone Hid. What is it with me and Dollzones and not being able to pin them down? DZ Hid I will talk about in a separate post as I have a lot of photos to go into that post. For today's post, we'll concentrate on the two SD sculpts that are giving me no end of trouble.

Let's start with Popodoll Bomu.

I've lost count of the number of wigs I have bought for this doll and discarded because they did not work. This is the latest wig and I just do not like it on him. Maybe it's because his face up (by the fabulous Fabuula Rasa) just outshines practically everything I try on him. His character has also given me a ton of grief because I just never know who he is and I think it's because I've never found the right wig for him.

Here he is sans wig. He's a beautiful sculpt but I feel like his head is very egg shaped. Plus he's supposed to be able to wear 9-10inch wigs but they're always too big for him not that you would think so just looking at that massive noggin.

At this point I want to put him on a head stand and display him as a piece of art sans wig.

Next up is Dollzone Cosmo. I have had so much trouble with this sculpt from day one. I regret not getting him as a full doll although mind you, I wanted his head and thought I could get the body much later but got distracted by other dolls and then the body was discontinued. Yay.

This guy has been through three different face ups by three different artists. I mentioned in my last post I had decided to get him his own body. Since then, I've looked at a lot of bodies from different companies. Here's the problem. He's a 2010 head that's yellowed. Likely resin match with brand new bodies - unlikely.

Today, I decided to try him on three of the four doll bodies I have. I didn't bother trying him on the Dollshe body because that neck is way too big anyway and Dollshe production times are way too long.

When he first arrived, I did have him on this AOD body for a while but it always bugged me because to me, he looks bobble headed on this body. The shoulders are not wide enough to balance out that noggin. Clothing did not help.

Excuse the resin mismatch here. On a Popodoll 68cm body. I couldn't even get the S-hook to lift high enough to get his head attached properly so it's just balancing there. It's not bad but the full body shot which I didn't take a photo of makes his head look a smidge small for such a big body.

On a Soom Supergem body (old version). The head sits on top of the neck and the neck is a bit thick for it. To me, he looks a bit swan necked and I still feel the shoulders are not wide enough here either.

My conclusion? I hate every body I seem to have him on. I think he may end up as a display head on a head stand looking pretty. I don't want to spend a few hundred on a body that may not match, resin or proportion wise as it's difficult to sell on resin these days.

So ... in waltzes ...

** Company photo by UniverseDoll

UniverseDoll Higos. I discovered this company recently on Legenddoll.net. It seems like these dolls are made by a single doll artist/sculptor based in China. The style is unusual and a bit quirky which appeals to me a lot. I'm currently in contact with Erica from Legenddoll.net (they are dealers/agents for several bjd brands) to see if the heads of these dolls can be ordered separately. Of course I love the face up on the doll so I hope it's also available to order as well.

What this means is that I will just get rid of the Bomu character which I never quite clicked with anyway and make the UniverseDoll Higos a hybrid with the Popodoll body and turn him into my new Geraint / Merrick using different coloured eyes to show the two souls living inside the one body. I'm hoping their normal white resin is more of a cream white.

That's the plan anyway. We'll see if that pans out.

  1. I think that Bomu would look good in a short black hair. It can be a nice contrast to his gentle face-up.

Even if causes troubles I like him very much. :)

    1. I did have short black hair on him at one point. It looked okay. I'm just overly fussy with the wig on this doll I think! I have ordered a dark brown short/long wig that I might try on him. I feel he could be a very classical face.

  2. Popodoll Bomu is a really nice sculpt and the faceup is great. Hm, I see him in short hair, dark brown perhaps. Why not trying the hair virtually in some graphic programme? Well, Cosmo seems a hopeless case but sometimes the solution may come up unexpectedly. Higos has nice cheekbones. However I see the tendency to make lower lip visibly bigger too often. That doesn't appeal to me. But of course everything is a matter of personal taste.
It's very interesting to read about all the changes and innovations you make. :)

    1. I know, poor Cosmo. He's not had a body of his own ever and he's been kicking around here since 2010 poor thing.

Thanks for the suggestion on the graphic program. I might give that a try. I do have a wig on order for him which might give him a more classical look. I will see what happens. I might wait until then before I make the final decision whether to replace his head or not. Or I just might get it anyway and just use my Popodoll body like I am using my Souldoll body, as bodies to play musical heads with!!

  3. Well, that was a great tip from Nana, try hair in some graphic program! Never thought of that!
And yes, his head has a strange shape - the forehead are a bit high but the right wig can fix that. I love his face, though. Such handsome one. And I do like UniverseDoll Higos, too.

    1. He's really been such a pain to style since day one. I keep trying though. I think maybe I need something more fantasy in terms of clothing rather than modern. I have a few ideas. I'll just see what happens.

  4. Oh boy! What a dilemma!!And unfortunately I'm not gonna be much help. But I know where you're coming from, I have the same problem with the majority of my BJ dolls on arrival. However, you need to do something or you're sure are gonna have a lot of body less heads if you keep this up! :)

To me the bodies you have shown are not muscular enough for the Dollzone Cosmo, they are all a bit skinny and he has a good solid look which needs a good solid body. The second body looks the best out of the three.

I guess you'll have to keep playing around with the heads until you get it right.
    Big hugs,
    X

    1. I know right? Too many heads, not enough bodies or rather not enough right bodies. I do have a wig on order for him so I'll see how that goes although that wig is going to take a month to make and ship. Ack.

I was thinking along the same lines Xanadu. My collection style, at least when it comes to the boys tends towards tall, slender and lanky rather than buff. Whilst I admire the buff bodies, they're not really to my style which essentially means Cosmo may end up as a decorative art piece on a head stand. But that's okay too. I can still take photos of him.

I feel like I am playing a lot of musical bodies lately. In any other hobby, that would totally sound strange.

  5. I love Higos! Such an interesting face! I had never heard of this company! Bomu is beautiful as well, maybe a wig with less volume on the sides would look good on him? Displaying heads only is actually a great idea, I think of them as little sculptures, it is beautiful to see!

    1. I am waiting on a wig from him so hopefully that works out. I decided to wait and see before ordering anything if I can still make him work for me. Thanks for the suggestion!
